AMENDMENT - Navigation Notice 13086-1, MVN 21-02

NAVIGATION RESTRICTIONS
Gulf Intracoastal Waterway
(Port Allen-Morgan City Alternate Route)
Port Allen Lock

 

Reference Navigation Bulletin No. 21-02, dated 5 January 2021, stating that Port Allen Lock will have intermittent closures from 12 through 14 January 2021, during daylight hours, due to a hired labor unit removing damaged sections of the floating guidewall from the recent barge allision.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, MARINERS ARE ADVISED THAT THE DAMAGED SECTION OF WOOD AND PLASTIC TIMBER THAT WAS HANGING INTO THE FOREBAY AND PARTIALLY BLOCKING THE CHANNEL HAS BEEN REMOVED.  THE DAMAGED SECTION WILL BE MARKED WITH 4 WHITE FLASHING LIGHTS AT NIGHT.  UNTIL PERMANENT REPAIRS ARE MADE, THE FOLLOWING RESTRICTIONS WILL APPLY UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE:

WESTBOUND RESTRICTIONS

  • THE RESTRICTION ON TOW LENGTH HAS BEEN LIFTED.
  • ALL TOWS WITH MORE THAN ONE BARGE ARE REQUIRED TO USE AN ASSIST VESSEL
  • SINGLE BARGE TOWS WILL BE PERMITTED TO LOCK WESTBOUND WITHOUT AN ASSIST VESSEL.

 EASTBOUND RESTRICTIONS

  • TOWS GREATER THAN 650’ LONG ARE REQUIRED TO USE AN ASSIST VESSEL ON THE HEAD OF THE TOW ONCE THEY EXIT THE LOCK INTO THE RIVER IN ORDER TO STEER CLEAR OF THE DAMAGED AREA AT THE END OF THE GUIDEWALL.
